Slaithwaite, Huddersfield. 2006.
mixed media.
the mill was built in a day, during an exhibition called 'the Field'.
I’d had an idea about a machine that ‘said’ remember repetitively for a while before the show.
I’d visited the site if the show beforehand and had looked into the areas history ( Slaitwait is an old cotton town, mill and coal powered ) and on the day a small steam running down the side of the field got me thinking about building my ‘remember’ machine.
The machine would spell out the word remember. Time passing, history, mills and industry, making things to be remembered by, little things trying to be important, the calming effect of repetition and flowing water….
Things sort of fell into place, with materials I needed easy to find: stones to build a dry stone column, a wooden disc, a length of piping….
The machine was a water powered mill, the mill didn’t grind anything or turn machinery but spelt a word.
